The Art of a Creative
by Whitley Gillin
Where the spirit does not work with the hand, there is no art.”
–Leonardo Da Vinci
As a Pisces, I was born to be a dreamer and visionary; I was born a creative. Creativity runs through my veins and is the foundation of everything I am and wish to be. I compare the gifts and talents of an artist to the superpowers of a superhero. Not everyone is blessed with creative abilities; only a select few are given the ability to dream and envision something greater than themselves. Those blessed with virtuosity possess a key to open a realm only few will ever visit. Once we become conscious of our God given talents, it is vital we share those talents with the world. It is through our creative nature we bring humanity back to society.
For as long as I can remember, I have always been a creative spirit. I fell in love with the Arts at a very young age. Drawing, poetry, and dance became my escape from a cruel world that was designed to devour the young black girl I was. Art was my saving grace; it became my way of expressing God’s love without boundaries. It was a way to release all the frustration, anger, and resentment that disturbed my spirit. To this day, creativity is still my calm in any storm. It is my release lever when life becomes too much to handle. On canvas I paint my emotions and my soul leaks onto paper as I write my pain away. Art is my source of healing. It is the way I find sanity within my insanity; it is my heaven in a Godless world.
Bring your humanity to your art. Bring your art to humanity.”

Art has a way of changing circumstances and giving individuals a new perspective on life. It gives a unique view of the world that is raw and unacquainted. It’s through our creations we capture understanding, unity, peace and love in a form that can be introduced to the world. Have you ever heard a song that narrated your life, and suddenly you no longer felt alone? Have you ever stumbled across a painting that displayed the very depths of your soul? Have you ever read a poem or a quote that professed every feeling you were never able to describe? Have you ever created a drawing that traced all your fears and hopes? Art is a way to speak with no words, define with no exceptions, and show purpose in everything. Each new thought or vision is a conception; creatives must follow through with that inspiration and deliver into the world a new depiction, a new aspect, and a new sense of reality. The world needs to experience the craft and passion creators exude. We must reveal our art, our creations, to the world. In the words of the soul queen Erykah Badu, “I’m an artist and I’m sensitive about my shit”. I understand the internal fear of sharing your most personal pieces with the world, because when we do, we in turn unveil our most vulnerable selves. In that vulnerability lives our purpose. God does not give us a talent and purpose to hoard. That piece you conceal in fear of judgement may be imperative to the survival of another. We must step into our purpose, heal with our works of art, and use our skills to mentor.
Art has no boundaries, no limitations, and no rules. In art there is no space for condemnatory opinions; there is only room for love, peace, and truth.
