Meet Erika Latanya, a National Bestselling Author & the Founder of Dear Diary Cosmetics. I had the pleasure of chatting with Erika about her passion behind starting her company and advice for aspiring and seasoned authors.
What motivated you to start Dear Diary Cosmetics and Dear Diary Publishing?
EL: I started both companies because I’ve always had a want and passion for becoming an entrepreneur. I wanted to create an empire and have both businesses bounce off one another. The name came from my everyday writing in my diary so it’s sentimental to me.
At what point did you know you were interested in a career of writing and publishing?
EL: “ I knew I had an interest for a career in writing when I was 8. I was the silly kid who wrote down the lyrics I heard off the radio lol. I knew back in middle school when I started writing poetry.”
As a visionary and creative, what keeps you motivated and grounded?
It’s hard to stay motivated sometimes. I must say… my dreams keep me motivated. When I think about where I could go.”
How would you define success? Has a mistake ever led you to success?
EL: “Success is not about money but the impact you have on people. Everyone isn’t going to like you or what you do, but love the few that do.”
Which of your traits are you most proud of?
EL: “Caring and compassion. I care about things and other people way too much. It’s both a blessing and a curse.”
How do you overcome “writers block” when you’re feeling uninspired?
EL: “I take a break. I may read and/or just catch up on the other things which interest me. I have to take care of myself and have ME time.”
What’s the best piece of advice you received when you first started your writing career?
EL: “The best piece of advice I received in my opinion was “Write what you like”.
What would you tell a person who hasn’t discovered their purpose yet?
EL: “You still have time, don’t rush”.
What advice do you have for aspiring writers and authors?
EL: “If it’s your passion, go for it. Don’t write just because”.
What’s your biggest goal this year?
EL: “I want my books to be in libraries and I want my cosmetics line to expand with customers. “
