Hello Guys,
I am back with another blog discussing my latest thriller read titled “The Banker’s Wife” by Cristina Alger. As an avid reader my whole life, I love diving and getting lost in a good book that puts me on the edge of my seat. Lately, I was in a slight reading slump and I needed a book to boost me back up in my flow and I knew a thriller book would do the trick! The book that got me out of that slump was a thriller mystery titled “The Banker’s Wife” and I picked this book out on a whim on a library trick. Overall, I LOVED this book and I rated it 5 stars. It was also a gem because this was my first read by this author, but it definitely won’t be my last. After I started reading about 100 pages in this book, I went to the library and rented another book by Cristina because I was instantly a fan LOL.
So let’s dive into the synopsis first before I give my review!
Synopsis: On an early morning in November, a couple boards a private plane bound for Geneva, flying into a storm. Soon after, it simply drops off the radar and its wreckage is later uncovered in the Alps. Among the disappeared is Matthew Lerner, an insider at Swiss United, a powerful offshore bank. His young widow, Annabel, is left grappling with the secrets he left behind, and as she begins a desperate search for answers, she determines that Matthew’s death was no accident. She soon finds herself in a terrifying cat-and-mouse chase, on the run from his powerful enemies, who will stop at nothing to hide the truth. Meanwhile, ambitious society journalist Marina Tourneau has finally landed at the top. Now that she’s engaged to Grant Ellis, she will stop writing about powerful families and finally be a part of one. Her entry into the upper echelons of New York’s social scene is more appealing than any article could ever be, but, after the death of her mentor, she agrees to dig into one more story. While looking into Swiss United, Marina uncovers information that implicates some of the most powerful men in the financial world, including a few who are too close to home. The story also could be the answer to Annabel’s heart-breaking search-and save her life-if Marina chooses to publish it…
Author Bio: Cristina Alger is the author of The Darlings and This Was Not the Plan. A graduate of Harvard College and NYU Law School, she worked as a financial analyst and a corporate attorney before becoming a writer. She lives in New York with her husband and children.
My Review: As I continued to read this book, it was pretty clear that Cristina was very knowledgeable about the topics discussed in the book and I learned things in the law world that I didn’t know before, so I loved that insight. For a thriller, it was a slow burn (which I don’t mind for this genre) at first, and it started picking up more suspense in the middle of the book. The book contained a lot of characters, but the author executed it well and it was an easy read to follow. The chapters wasn’t numbered, but it was told from two POV’s from the two main female characters, Annabel and Marina. You got to see the story unfold from both point of views which I loved. Both women came from different backgrounds and they never met in the book, but the story line and characters linked both women in so many ways which was very interesting. Annabel and Marina were both lovable characters and they both showed their strengths and weaknesses throughout the book by their traits and actions in the book. I enjoyed them both, and my heart went out to them as they searched for their closures on the questions unanswered that they searched for during the book. You have Annabel, a sudden widow who is looking for answers about the full truth about what happened to her husband Matthew and the details of his death from the crash that certain people were hiding the truth about. Then you have Marina, a blossoming journalist stuck between a rock and hard place, with a story she has to unfold and also being pressured by her fiance and her soon to be in-laws on choosing an “image” over her career. The book ended up having a lot of plot twists, turns, and hiccups and it also gave you an insight of the dark world of corruption, secrets, and offshore bank accounts that many people didn’t want to be exposed to the public world. It took me two days to complete this book on paperback and I enjoyed every minute of reading it! Thriller books are my go-to in the book world, so I gave this book 5 stars hands down!
I also shared a vlog going into further details about the book on my YouTube channel! If you are interested in watching and sharing your feedback on it, you can watch the video here .
