As the go to for entertainment and lifestyle, VERNIQUE is a force on and off the air. When she is not on air with the Morning Madhouse Show, she is hosting live events such as 17th Cancer Society Ball Fashion Show, being a ambassador, and a social media influencer. Vernique and I discussed entertainment and lifestyle on air, business influences, juggling her careers, and her motto for times of adversity.
VERNIQUE | Radio Personality
What inspired you to start a career in radio and TV?
VH: “I was inspired by my desire to venture into an industry which will allow me to showcase my “big” personality and extrovert characteristics. I began to blog, then a friend recommended that I interview an artist. My friend owns a media company so he created provisions for me to facilitate the interview. From that moment, I fell in love. Literally. Everything fell into place since then. Doors began to open, I worked hard and prayed even harder.”
Who are some of your influences and why?
VH: “There are so many women that inspires me. Currently, I’m inspired by Kela Walker, Angie Martinez, Natural Empress, Karen Civil, Jamila Justafa … just to name a few. I’m inspired by these women because they’re currently thriving within the Media & Entertainment industry. I’m also inspired by Karleen Roy and MingLee from a business aspect, they’re small business owners that did the work, established their niche and succeeded at it.”
What is a typical day for you like?
VH: “A typical day for me includes having fun on-air with the Morning Madhouse Show from 7AM – 10AM. Followed by working along with the Sales & Marketing team at the radio station. I usually make an effort to hit the gym. In between those hours, I’m brainstorming at some point. Of course, scrolling through social media. I also make time for myself to relax whether it’s watching tv, reading a book or hanging with family/friends.”
What’s your favorite thing to come home to after a long day of work?
VH: “A peaceful home! Lol.”
What can we expect from you in 2019?
VH: “Honestly, that question is so hard to answer. Here’s an example why – in 2016, at the beginning of the year I didn’t plan to venture into Media. At the beginning of 2017, I had no idea that I would end up on a local news station reporting for the Entertainment segment. When 2018 started, I didn’t know I would end the year on the Morning Show of a local leading urban station.
My hope and expectation for 2019 is to continue to thrive in the Media & Entertainment industry. I am currently working on a few things and I hope that it’s God’s will they come to fruition. “
What’s the most important things you have to remember when you’re live or on air?
1. To ALWAYS be myself
2. To have fun
3. To be personable and speak to “one person”
What’s the most important things to remember when it comes to accounting?
VH: “It’s important to analyze the nature of the business and its processes to ensure that the appropriate accounting principles are being applied. ”
How do you balance and juggle both of your careers?
VH: “I left full-time Accounting in 2017; however, there was a point where I had to create a balance between both careers. Planning is key. Being organized helped me to create this balance. At times it became tiring but my passion and desire to succeed kept me going.”
What are some personal affirmations you tell yourself when you feel like giving up?
VH: “Whew! There are sooo many! LOL! I tend to remind myself to take it one day at time firstly. Secondly, I tell myself that God didn’t bring me this far to leave me. “What’s for me, will always be for me” is an affirmation I constantly use to kill fear and doubt. “Do not focus on the negative possibilities.” “Everything is possible for him who believes. (Mark 9:23). “Bad days build character.” I can go on and on. I actually have a lot saved in my phone. It’s important to keep a positive mindset, because the mind affect one’s attitude and behavior. If you believe that you’ll succeed, then you’ll work really hard to ensure that you succeed. A mindset filled with failure and pessimistic thoughts allows one to become so consumed by it they wouldn’t even bother to see the glass half full but rather it will always seem half empty.”
